Bully's Pantry/Extra Table Collab Provides Free Chickens to Students

Mississippi State University’s Bully’s Pantry is taking care of what matters this holiday season through a partnership with Extra Table that provided frozen chickens to students.

Each Thanksgiving, Extra Table, a statewide non-profit food bank founded in 2009 by restauranteur Robert St. John, donates over 9,000 chickens to Mississippians through their “Henny 9000” program. They hit the road at the speed of the Indy 500 and deliver over 9,000 chickens in just two days.

Bully’s Pantry received 150 whole, frozen chickens to share with pantry shoppers. Frequent shoppers received an email detailing when and where to receive chickens. Along with a whole chicken, shoppers were also given a bag of sides and fruits donated by Extra Table’s monthly donation and local pantry partners, ensuring that all shoppers would have a complete holiday meal.

Participants eagerly lined up outside the pantry to pick up a chicken.

Bully’s Pantry Graduate Assistant Joel Linton was pleased with the turnout from pantry shoppers and grateful for the support from Extra Table.

“This donation means so much to Bully’s Pantry because it shows what can happen when our community comes together,” said Linton. “Thanks to Extra Table’s generous donation, we were able to provide 150 chickens and Thanksgiving sides to students who needed a little extra support.”

Bully’s Pantry, located at 120 Morgan Avenue and open Monday through Friday from 1-4 p.m., is available to all MSU students with a valid MSU student ID. Bully’s Pantry also operates a no-cost vending machine on the first floor of the Colvard Student Union for on-the-go essentials.
